Meg Pickett teaching in South Africa.
|
This past July, Meg Pickett joined a group from Northview Christian Life Church on a trip to South Africa. Meg’s purpose for her journey was to help young Africans realize their own potential; while in South Africa, she taught two courses of a class called CPR: Creating Positive Relationships.
“It’s a life saving class just like the other CPR,” Pickett said. “It teaches whole person benefits of healthy sexuality....”
The class focused on teaching young people about the impact sex has not only on their physical bodies, but their mental, social, emotional, and spiritual lives. A group of 10 Africans, ages 19-23, accompanied Pickett as she traveled and taught. She said, they “responded well” to what they were learning throughout their time with her.
There were two classes taught on the trip. The first was with a group of about 30 young people, and the second was to a group of about 200. While the larger class was much more challenging, Pickett stated she felt that she still connected well with them.
When asked what she saw as the biggest cultural difference between the American students she teaches and the African students, Pickett replied: “Kids are kids are kids around the world. It was interesting that they received it almost the same [as American students]. The concept of having a healthy relationship is sought after all over the world; they know it makes sense to make healthy decisions.”
Making healthy choices is a vital lesson for anyone to learn. Now, thanks to Meg, there are more African teens who are equipped with the knowledge they need to make those choices.
