| ORPHAN CARE |
|
Horizon's first choice for orphan
care is a home-based model in which orphans live
with extended family or foster parents. Recruitment,
training, and supervision of extended family or
foster parents is done through staff, pastors, churches,
and social workers. As part of our care, and through
child sponsorship (see below), we provide as needed:
- Food and clothing
- Educational funding for tuition,
books, and school uniforms
- Ongoing counseling services
- After-school homework and skills
training assistance
- Basic health care
- Orphan Adventure Camps and Clubs
for Christian nurture
All Horizon services are coordinated
through Community Centers in partnership with local
organizations or churches. When a home based-model
is impossible or not yet established, we provide children's
drop-in centers or children's villages. These are
often characterized by:
- Central gathering facility
• Houses center supervisor and family
• Food services for village orphans
• Study area for village orphans
- Practical skills school that provides
subjects such as carpentry, sewing, and welding
In extreme cases, Horizon cares for
orphans in children's homes, or residential homes in
urban settings housing both the caregiver staff and
the orphans. Food, clothing, education, and basic health
care are provided. Each home is connected to a local
church. |
