News -This is Why After-School Meals Are So Important

Dear Friends,

You may not be aware that in some parts of Africa, Horizon serves hot and nutritious meals to many of our sponsored kids every day after school.

One of the children who benefits from this important service is an 8-year-old girl named Palesa.   June reduced photo

Palesa lives with her grandma and three brothers in Matipane Village, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

She is enrolled as a student at Femane Primary School where she is in the third grade.  Her favorite subject is learning the Sepedi language.  She also loves to read, watch television, and play netball.

Palesa and her three brothers lived with their father until his death earlier this year.  Their mother left the family some time ago, and no one knows where she is or how to contact her.

Like so many other aging African grandparents, Palesa’s grandmother is unable to adequately provide for her grandchildren.  She has taken on the unexpected task of being responsible for raising them at a time in her life when her health is declining and she is unable to earn a living.

Social Security, and other related government benefits for the elderly, are almost non-existent in Africa.  Grown children usually care for their aging parents.

The AIDS pandemic and related diseases, however, have claimed a generation, saddling aging grandparents with the challenge of caring for their grandchildren.

This is why after-school meals are so important to the ongoing health of Palema, her brothers, and hundreds of other kids like them.

Unfortunately, these daily meals are quite expensive and aren’t covered by child sponsorship donations.

In South Africa, where these hot and nutritious meals are served through our Orphan Drop-in Centers, the food portion of our child sponsorship budget covers breakfasts and meals on weekends.

Palema’s main and most important meal of the day, then, is the one served at the Matipane Orphan Drop-in Center Monday through Friday where she and other kids gather for worship, Bible study, homework tutoring, and sports.

While our Horizon partners in Africa grow many of the fresh vegetables that are served in these meals, the meat and other parts of the meal have to be purchased.

In order to continue providing these meals for Palema and other kids like her through the end of the year, we need to receive an additional $10,000 beyond our anticipated funding sources.

Will you prayerfully consider how God would have you respond?

Your gift of $10, $25, $50, $100, or more will be used to continue blessing hundreds of Horizon-sponsored kids with great food and good health for months to come.

Thankfully yours, on behalf of Palema and others,

P.S. Adri van der Merwe, Horizon Thusanang’s Orphan Care Coordinator in Limpopo Province, South Africa is in urgent need of your prayers for God’s healing.  She has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia, is undergoing extensive chemotherapy in a Pretoria hospital, and is quite ill.
